As the Nile river flooded each year in ancient Egypt, frogs would appear in abundant numbers as the waters receded and left nutrient-rich soil behind that supported agriculture. Frogs became symbols of abundance, and a frog became a symbol for the number hefnu, which meant either 100,000 or simply "an immense number.”
